History of Demre:
Demre has a rich history dating back to the Lycian era, when it was an important commercial center. In the Roman era, it became a part of the province of Lycia and was known as Myra. It was during this time that St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, gained fame for his legendary generosity and devotion to children. The town continued to flourish under the Byzantine Empire, until it was eventually occupied by the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century. Today, Demre retains much of its ancient heritage and is a popular tourist destination for those interested in history and culture.
